When the mess at home gets out of control, and I see my planner filled to the brim, I find myself wrestling with a low-grade anxiety that bumbles around, threatening to spiral at any moment and ruin my mood.
I don’t do well when things are constantly overwhelming and stressful, and I know I’m not alone. In these suffocating moments, I remind myself that God is a God of order, not chaos, and pray for strength to take steps to clear the mess – at home, and in my heart.

How to Simplify & Organize
So let us take 5 gentle steps towards a home that is in order, and a mind that is uncluttered. This is the first half of the Simplify & Organize series, where first – I share 5 ways to take control of your home! In short:
- Have a refreshing Morning Routine.
- Organize everything in a Home Management Binder.
- Clear emails every night.
- Plan ahead.
Let us learn how to simplify and organize our homemaking, by His grace.
When we have too much stuff, no amount of organizing will help. We need to ruthlessly declutter to make space for what we truly love and need. So the first step would be to clear the clutter! Take a trash bag and walk around the house and dump stuff away! Don’t overthink this step, and don’t get distracted looking at old photos…ask me how I know. 😉
2) Refreshing Morning Routine
Whether you are a coffee person or not, all of us have something that puts us in a better mood. I like warm lemon water or kombucha every morning – starts my day just right! I do a 10-minute exercise at home, read the Bible and start preparing breakfast before my girl wakes up. Getting a headstart before the chaos begins is always a wise move! Also, check out Crystal Paine’s Make Over Your Morning course if you want to learn how to create a better morning routine!
3) Home Management Binder
I used to keep all the important information in my planner, but after I got married, it made more sense to create a Home Management Binder so everything related to the home is easily accessible. Things like meal plans, insurance matters, warranties, cleaning routines, important birth dates, etc are all kept in it. You can do up your own, or get a pretty one like THIS here! 🙂 Either way, this binder will be a lifesaver so you will never be at a loss, looking for important documents.
4) Clear emails every night
There are nights when I’m too exhausted to do this, but I try to keep up on this as much as possible because it really makes a difference! I get a ton of emails every day so this helps me get to the important emails faster, instead of fumbling through 4356476 emails to find that ONE email I desperately want to read. Also, I’ve switched off notifications for emails and it feels amazing!! I only check them when it is my scheduled email-time, so I don’t feel so stretched and distracted throughout the day.
5) Plan Ahead
Every evening, as my dear husband prepares my sweetheart for bedtime, I take about 15-30 minutes to reflect on the day and plan for the next. This little pocket of time clears my head and gives me space to pray and think about the next day’s priorities. Planning ahead gives us confidence in knowing what is coming, and helps our days to be more purposeful and hence, fruitful!
As a way to help you take back control over managing your home, I’ve created FREE printables for you! The Daily Planner Sheet includes space for the top 5 goals of each day, as well as a brain-dump section – that’s something that has helped me a lot!
The 10-minute Task List is meant to help you gain momentum on completing the tasks that are swirling around your head. Many times, we procrastinate thinking that we need the perfect amount of time or circumstance to do what’s on our list. However, that’s not true! As busy Mums, we need to be creative in finding time to do what matters and often, all we need is to get started! So list out your 10-minute tasks and when your child is happily occupied, refer to your list and choose a task to work on.
