So I shared that my One Word for 2018 is Brave, and each month brings me closer to living out that simple but turns-your-life-upside-down 5-letter word. When the chance came to review this book as part of Maria’s launch team, I was on board immediately, admittedly for selfish reasons – I wanted to learn how to break the fear cycle so I can truly live brave.

I have never been much of a brave girl. Fears have been part of my growing up years as far back as I can remember. Not that I didn’t have fun childhood memories, but growing up as a good girl meant that I also did a lot of things out of fear.
When I accepted Christ in 2006, I learned that being loved by Jesus meant there was no need to fear. But I did not know how to break the fear cycle.
Especially now that I’m a Mum, the fear of things happening to my sweetheart is very real. One little thought spirals into a dozen more and before I know it, I’m in panic mode and my prayers are desperate and fear-driven, not faith-filled. Can you relate?
How to Break the Fear Cycle
In this book, Maria helps you to conquer these patterns of fear-inducing thoughts by choosing to look to God and not the band-aids we create for ourselves. She understands the stress and fear we face each day and gently encourages us to not stay troubled. Her own testimony gives us the courage to be bold together, and bring our fears out of that dark, hidden place and into God’s Light, where He works.
I must admit that I was nervous reading the beginning chapters. It was a wrestle with God, saying “Do I really have to go there? I thought I’m done with this? Can we move on?” So dear friend – this is not an easy read. But if you want to live Brave, this is a must-read.
There are questions for reflection after each chapter, and these help us pause, slow down and process what God is telling us. I would recommend reading this book slowly and in the quieter moments of your day. It is not something you want to rush through if you authentically want to be changed by God and break free from the fear cycle.
