Do you sometimes feel uncertain about what to teach your toddler? Are you overwhelmed with so many different approaches and methods? When I was recently approached by Stellar Kids Learning Planet to do a review of their M-Genius program catered for 6-month-olds to 6-year-olds, I was thankful because I’d heard a lot about the benefits of right-brain training.
Since I’m not skilled in right-brain training, having Ellie sign up for the class made sense! It was quite an eye-opener.

The M-Genius class is a weekly 60-90 minute program, with several fast-paced activities to keep the toddlers’ attention on them. They combine right-brain training with hands-on Montessori materials to give you the best of both worlds, so to speak. 😉
If you do a little research, you will find a lot of support for right-brain training from young as the right hemisphere of the brain develops fastest from birth up to 6 years of age. Hence, it is during this period that stimulation of the right brain is most effective.
This parent-accompanied class is aligned with MOE’s guidelines for early learning and Montessori curriculum. Teacher Jeslyn was very patient with the little ones, and I like that it is a small ratio of 1 teacher to 2 or 3 kids at each time.
We went for 4 sessions, and while Ellie started out apprehensive (she is one who needs a long time to warm up), she started being curious and itching to explore from the second session onwards. So much so that at times, it was a challenge to get her to sit!
Some of the activities included in M-Genius are: story memory games, ESP games, flash cards, English & Mandarin poems, photographic memory training, and Hanyu Pinyin.
Ellie has been singing the “yi-wu” Hanyu Pinyin song ever since! It’s adorable. 🙂 On the whole, her favorite activities were the crafts, painting and outdoor activities (held monthly).
The staff was very approachable and passionate about this teaching method to help young kids. I appreciated the frequent reminders for parents to “kiss kiss and hug hug your children!” and how they praised each child for effort, even if they do not get the answers right. Every session was fun and enjoyable while being very interesting and educational.
They do a Progress Review once in a few months too, which helps the communication between parents and teachers!
If cost is an issue, you may want to consider trying it out for a few months to first get an understanding of this teaching approach. Then you can try incorporating the basic methods and principles for your own homeschooling!
